Finger Gnosis Predicts Children's Numeracy, Despite Controlling for Visuo-Spatial Memory

چکیده
Finger gnosis, the ability to mentally represent one’s fingers, predicts numeracy in children (Penner-Wilger et al., 2007, 2009) and adults (Penner-Wilger et al., 2014, 2015). It has been argued that the relation may reflect visuo-spatial memory, rather than finger gnosis ability per se. This rival hypothesis was not supported in adults (Penner-Wilger et al., 2015), but here we examined it in children, using both a novel set of Grade 1 participants (N = 119) and a separate set previously reported on (Penner-Wilger et al., 2007, 2009; N=146). In multiple regressions, for each set of participants, finger gnosis significantly predicted numeracy skills, measured using the KeyMath Numeration subtest. Moreover, the relation between finger gnosis and numeracy held for both sets of participants, despite controlling for visuo-spatial memory, measured using a Corsi-block test. These findings suggest that the relation between finger gnosis and numeracy is robust and does not reflect visuo-spatial memory.

Finger Gnosis And Symbolic Number Comparison as Robust Predictors of Adult Numeracy
Finger gnosis and magnitude comparison were examined as predictors of adult numeracy. Previous findings were extended by (1) controlling for domain-general comparison processes (using a luminance judgment task), (2) controlling for visuo-spatial memory, and (3) examining the robustness of the relations across different numeracy tests, including exact and approximate calculations. Control variab...
متن کاملFive- to 7-Year-Olds’ Finger Gnosia and Calculation Abilities
The research examined the relationship between 65 5- to 7-year-olds' finger gnosia, visuo-spatial working memory, and finger-use in solving single-digit addition problems. Their non-verbal IQ and basic reaction time were also assessed. Previous research has found significant changes in children's representational abilities between 5 and 7 years. One aim of the research was to determine whether ...
متن کاملDigit Ratio Predicts Spatial Memory Performance in Women
The ratio of the length of the 2nd and 4th digits of the hand is an indicator of prenatal testosterone exposure and has been shown to be a within sex correlate of various abilities, such as visuo-spatial processing in men. However, a number of studies report such links also exist in women, whilst others show no link for either sex. Using a unique paradigm that sub-divides visuo-spatial processi...
متن کاملThe differential relations between verbal, numerical and spatial working memory abilities and children's reading comprehension
Working memory predicts children's reading comprehension but it is not clear whether this relation is due to a modality-specific or general working memory. This study, which investigated the relations between children's reading skills and working memory (WM) abilities in 3 modalities, extends previous work by including measures of both reading comprehension and reading accuracy. Tests of word r...
متن کاملSubitizing and Finger Gnosis Predict Calculation Fluency in Adults
Both subitizing, the ability to enumerate small sets without counting, and finger gnosis, the ability to mentally represent one’s fingers, have been found to predict calculation skill in children (Penner-Wilger et al., 2007, 2009). In the current paper, we examined whether these same relations hold for young adults. Consistent with the developmental data, both subitizing and finger gnosis were ...
